In the 29th match of the ODI World Cup 2023, India faced England with the aim of securing their sixth consecutive victory and reclaiming the top spot on the points table. After being asked to bat first, India found themselves in a challenging situation at 40 for 3, and then at 164 for 5 before managing to post a total of 229 for 9.
In the second innings, the Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, showcased an outstanding performance with Jasprit Bumrah taking 3 wickets for 32 runs, Kuldeep Yadav contributing 2 wickets for 24 runs, and Mohammed Shami securing 4 wickets for just 22 runs. They dismissed the 2019 champions for a mere 129 runs in 34.5 overs.
With this convincing win, India not only reclaimed the top spot in the points table, surpassing South Africa but also maintained their unbeaten status in the 10-team tournament. However, despite their strong position, there’s still a way they could miss out on a spot in the semi-finals.
India’s dominance in the tournament can be threatened by Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, both of which have accumulated four points from five games. If India were to lose their remaining three matches by a significant margin, one or both of these teams could match India’s current points tally of 12. To prevent India from advancing, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, who faced off in match 30, will need to win all four of their remaining games at any cost.
At the same time, India could secure their semi-final berth with just one more point, or if the Afghanistan-Sri Lanka match is washed out. Their next challenge will be against Sri Lanka in match 33 of the mega event, to be held at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Following the win against England, Captain Rohit Sharma expressed his satisfaction at the post-match presentation, saying, “This was the game where a lot of character in the squad shone through. When the times were tough, all our experienced players stood up at the right time and secured the victory for us.”
