In a ceremony on Saturday at the Vatican, Pope Francis promoted Indian Catholic priest George Jacob Koovakad to the rank of Cardinal.
The leading Catholic clergy attended a ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica where Koovakad and 20 other priests from throughout the globe were inducted as Cardinals.
Who is George Jacob Koovakad?
George Jacob Koovakad, the sixth Indian Cardinal, has been elevated to the Cardinal position by Pope Francis. Born on August 11, 1973, in Kerala, Koovakad joined the Catholic clergy in 2004 and began his diplomatic career in 2006.
He served as Secretary of the Nunciature in South Korea and Iran from 2009 to 2014. From 2014 to 2020, he served as the counselor of the Nunciature in Costa Rica and Venezuela. Since 2020, he has been in the Secretariat of the State of the Holy See, overseeing the Pontiff’s global travels. Koovakad also held the title of ‘Archbishop of Nisibis in Turkey.’
The Prime Minister remarked that he was delighted at His Eminence George Jacob Koovakad being created a Cardinal of the Holy Roman Catholic Church by His Holiness Pope Francis.
