The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), a premier institution for journalism and mass communication, has been accorded deemed university status by the Ministry of Education. With its new status, IIMC is now permitted to offer degrees, including doctorates.
The UGC has wanted deemed university status in a separate category.
The status applies to IIMC New Delhi and its five regional campuses in Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir), Amravati (Maharashtra), Aizawl (Mizoram), Kottayam (Kerala), and Dhenkanal (Odisha).

IIMC is committed to giving its best to promote education, training, and research in mass communication,” the institute stated in a post on its social media handle X, formerly Twitter.

The institution was established on August 17, 1965, by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India. It is regarded as an exceptional institution that provides high-quality journalism training.
The IIMC also functions as a training facility for officials of the Indian Information Service.
The notion of granting presumed university status to the IIMC is not new. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry approved the plan in 2016.
In 2018, Niti Aayog suggested merging the IIMC with Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Centre for Media Studies or Jamia Millia Islamia’s AJK Mass Communication Research Centre.
However, the institution, together with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the Education Ministry (then HRD), had dismissed the proposal.
