Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has strongly criticized the judiciary following a Supreme Court ruling that set a timeline for the President and Governors to act on Bills. Addressing Rajya Sabha interns, he questioned the judiciary’s power to direct the President and called Article 142—a provision granting the Supreme Court special powers—a “nuclear missile against democratic forces.”

He also raised concerns about the delay in disclosing a cash haul from Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma’s residence, the lack of an FIR, questioning judicial immunity, and the investigation’s sluggish pace. Dhankhar said the Constitution only grants prosecution immunity to the President and Governors and questioned why judges are treated differently.

He criticized the formation of a judicial committee to probe the matter, pointing out that only Parliament has the authority to act against judges. His comments follow the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that gubernatorial delays in clearing Bills were unconstitutional, which Dhankhar said risked undermining democratic accountability and the separation of powers.
