TRF Claims Pahalgam Terror Attack: A Look at Lashkar’s Proxy Group in Kashmir

Following the recent terror attack on tourists in Baisaran, South Kashmir’s Pahalgam, sources revealed that The Resistance Front (TRF) — a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) — claimed responsibility. The attack resulted in at least 26 deaths and multiple injuries.

Designated a terrorist group under India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in January 2023, TRF is accused of recruiting militants, spreading propaganda, facilitating infiltration, and smuggling arms and drugs into Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities say TRF emerged in 2019 as a front for LeT, aiming to project militancy as indigenous by avoiding overtly religious names like LeT or Jaish-e-Mohammad.

TRF’s commander Sheikh Sajjad Gul is also listed under UAPA’s Fourth Schedule. Initially functioning online after Article 370’s revocation, TRF evolved into a ground-level outfit, linked to groups like Tehreek-e-Millat Islamia and Ghaznavi Hind. It has threatened journalists, led recruitment drives, and claimed attacks since 2020.

Security agencies have dismantled TRF networks and seized weapons. The Indian government continues to intensify action against such groups, banning over 50 individuals and 40 organizations under UAPA provisions.
