The SC upheld the HC’s decision to cancel 25,000 appointments in West Bengal’s state run schools due to the highlight of a scam.
The Supreme Court upheld the Calcutta High Court's decision to cancel nearly 25,000 appointments in West Bengal’s state-run schools over the 2016 school jobs-for-cash scam. A bench led by CJI Sanjiv Khanna ruled that the recruitment process was tainted by fraud and manipulation, invalidating the appointments.
The court directed that salaries received by illegally appointed candidates must be refunded, though those still employed are exempt. A fresh recruitment process must be completed within three months, with possible relaxations for untainted candidates.
The case stems from allegations of irregularities in the 2016 recruitment by the WBSSC, where 23 lakh candidates applied for 24,640 vacancies, yet 25,753 appointment letters were issued.
The High Court cited tampered OMR sheets and rank manipulation in its April 2024 verdict. The Supreme Court had initially stayed the decision but allowed the CBI probe to continue. Despite concerns from the state about a staffing crisis, the Court upheld the terminations, affirming that the selection process was entirely compromised.
