Pakistan offers to cooperate with international investigators on the Pahalgam attack, denies links to terror groups, and warns against escalating tensions with
Pakistan believes an international investigation is necessary into the killing of 26 people in Pahalgam, Kashmir, earlier this week and is willing to cooperate, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif. In an interview, Asif said Pakistan was "ready to cooperate" with "any investigation conducted by international inspectors."
Pakistani officials have requested the Trump administration to help mediate the dispute, the report added.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply risen since the incident, with India suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and Pakistan closing its airspace to Indian flights.
Asif accused India of using the situation to justify freezing the water-sharing pact and gain domestic political advantages. He said India was taking retaliatory measures “without any proof, without any investigation.”
“We do not want a war to escalate, because its consequences would be disastrous for the region,” he added.
Responding to accusations about The Resistance Front’s alleged links to Pakistan-based groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Asif dismissed the claims, stating that Lashkar was now "defunct," with its members either under house arrest or in custody, according to the NYT.
