While the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] is holding its 24th party congress in Madurai, the party is facing internal turmoil in Alappuzha, with mass resignations causing a stir.

At least 56 members, including four branch secretaries from the Thumboli local committee, have reportedly quit the party. Sources indicate the resignations were triggered by the reinstatement of a former member who had been previously expelled for anti-party activities.

The resigning members allege that certain party leaders facilitated the return of the expelled individual and even included him in the local committee, despite his earlier public remarks against MLA P.P. Chitharanjan. They said a complaint was filed with the State leadership last year and the district committee had intervened, but the issue remained unresolved, ultimately prompting their resignation.

They also claimed that the party’s membership renewal process—known as scrutiny—was not carried out in most branches under the local committee, which may lead to several members losing their party status.

The CPI(M) leadership has yet to issue a public statement on the matter.
