A jawan was killed in an encounter between security forces and militants near Basantgarh in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district on Thursday morning, just two days after a deadly militant attack on tourists in Pahalgam, South Kashmir.
The confrontation began when security forces, conducting an ongoing search operation, made contact with militants in the area. The Army identified the fallen soldier as Havildar Jhantu Ali Shaikh of 6 PARA SF. “Acting on specific intelligence, a joint operation with the J&K Police was launched in Basantgarh. A firefight broke out after contact was established. One soldier was critically injured and later succumbed despite efforts to save him,” the Army said in a statement. Operations in the area, frequented by nomadic herders in summer, are still underway.
Meanwhile, a day earlier, two militants were killed in a separate encounter in the Uri sector of north Kashmir. The Army spotted a group of infiltrators attempting to cross into the Valley and engaged them in a gunfight, killing two. These incidents follow Tuesday’s Pahalgam attack, which claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a local pony handler.
