BlinkIt delivery workers in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, recently went on strike over issues like low pay, poor working conditions, and lack of summer uniforms. Around 150 workers protested last weekend, demanding a mandatory break between 12 PM and 4 PM, a pay raise, and basic facilities like shaded areas, drinking water, and seats.
They also claimed the Zomato-owned company responded by blocking their accounts and pressuring them to sign agreements that allegedly limit their ability to protest in the future.
Many workers, attracted by initial promises of good incentives, say their earnings have decreased. For instance, the payout for 2.5 km deliveries dropped from Rs 35 to Rs 26.
One worker, Santosh Jaiswal, reported that incentive rates were slashed, with delivery numbers increasing but pay per order decreasing. Legal experts pointed out that gig workers in India are not officially recognized under labor laws, leaving them with no clear right to strike. Workers also claimed they were forced to sign unclear contracts without proper protections, raising ethical concerns.
