On November 17, India will host the second Voice of the Global South Summit to discuss global developments and maintain momentum for a more inclusive world order ahead of a virtual G20 Summit.
The second Voice of the Global South Summit, like the first in January, will be held virtually. The initiative brought together 125 countries from the Global South on a single platform to share their perspectives and priorities.
India has positioned itself as the Global South’s representative, working during its G20 presidency to ensure that developing countries’ concerns are recognized and their priorities are considered in efforts to find solutions to the world’s most pressing problems.
The second Voice of the Global South Summit will focus on “sharing with countries of the Global South the key outcomes achieved in various G20 meetings” during India’s presidency of the grouping of the world’s 20 largest economies, according to a statement issued by the external affairs ministry on Wednesday.
“The challenges posed by global developments are also likely to be discussed,” the statement went on to say. The Voice of the Global South Summit will also serve as a forum to discuss how to maintain the “momentum generated toward our common aspiration of a more inclusive, representative, and progressive world order,” according to the announcement.
The summit will have 10 sessions. The inaugural and concluding sessions will feature heads of state or government and will be hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The theme of the inaugural leaders’ session is “Together, for everyone’s growth, with everyone’s trust”, while that of the concluding leaders’ session is “Global South: Together for one future”.
The environment ministers’ session has the theme “Sustainable solutions for climate resilience and climate finance,” while the energy ministers’ session has the theme “Affordable and inclusive energy transition for sustainable development.” The theme of the health ministers’ meeting will be “Solutions from the Global South for One Health,” while the theme of the commerce and trade ministers’ meeting will be “Global South and resilient supply chains.”
India announced three initiatives to assist developing countries in areas ranging from technology to health at the conclusion of the first Voice of the Global South Summit in January. It also announced the “Aarogya Maitri” project, which will supply medical supplies to developing countries affected by natural disasters.
India also used the first summit as a platform for developing-country ideas and suggestions, which were then channeled into discussions at G20 meetings.
On November 22, New Delhi will host a virtual meeting of G20 leaders to follow up on key decisions made at the G20 Summit in September, particularly the development agenda, and to discuss other global issues such as the geopolitical challenges posed by the Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas conflict.
