India Surpasses 2018 Medal Haul with 18 Golds at Asian Games

In a spectacular display of athleticism and skill, India has surged to fourth place in the medals tally at the Asian Games 2023, held in Hangzhou. With 81 medals in their kitty, including 18 golds, India’s contingent made the nation proud on October 4, 2023.

The star of the day was Neeraj Chopra, who continued his dominance in the men’s javelin event, clinching the gold medal. However, he didn’t stop there. Neeraj also played a pivotal role in the men’s 4x400m relay team’s triumph, securing another gold for India.

The field of athletics witnessed further glory for India as Harmilan Bains showcased her prowess in the women’s 800m, securing a silver medal with a remarkable time of 2 minutes and 3.75 seconds. Avinash Sable added to his accolades, following his 3000m steeplechase gold, by securing a silver in the men’s 5000m.

The Women’s 4x400m relay team delivered an outstanding performance, clinching a silver medal with a time of 3 minutes and 27.85 seconds. However, Bahrain emerged victorious, breaking India’s Games Record to secure the gold.

In archery, the dynamic duo of Ojas Pravin Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam outclassed South Korea in the mixed team compound event, claiming India’s 16th gold at the Hangzhou Games. This remarkable feat marked India’s 71st medal in the 2023 Asian Games, surpassing the nation’s previous medal tally from the 2018 edition.

Wrestler Sunil Kumar displayed his tenacity and skill, securing a bronze medal in the 87kg Greco-Roman event by defeating Kyrgyzstan’s Atabek Azesbekov in a closely contested match, with a score of 2-1 in the Bronze Medal match.

Adding to India’s medal haul, the pair of Ram Baboo and Manju Rani won a bronze medal in the 35km mixed race walking event, further contributing to the nation’s success.

Remarkably, India has now equaled its highest-ever tally of gold medals at a single edition of the Asian Games, signifying the nation’s continued growth and excellence in sports.

As we take a glance at the medal standings, People’s Republic of China leads the pack with a staggering 171 gold medals, followed by Japan with 37, and Republic of Korea with 33. India stands tall in fourth place with 18 golds, 31 silvers, and 32 bronzes, totaling 81 medals.
