In a significant move, the Indian government has granted permission for the export of 10,34,800 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to seven countries, including Nepal, Cameroon, and Malaysia. This development comes after the ban on the export of non-basmati white rice in July, which aimed to boost domestic supply. However, these exports are allowed on a case-by-case basis, with the government granting permission to meet the food security needs of certain countries upon their request.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has stated that the exports are permitted through the National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL).
The countries to which the export of non-basmati white rice has been permitted include Nepal, Cameroon, Cote D’ Ivore, Guinea, Malaysia, Philippines, and Seychelles.
The allocated quantities for each of these countries are as follows:
- Nepal: 95,000 tonnes
- Cameroon: 1,90,000 tonnes
- Cote D’ Ivore: 1,42,000 tonnes
- Guinea: 1,42,000 tonnes
- Malaysia: 1,70,000 tonnes
- Philippines: 2,95,000 tonnes
- Seychelles: 800 tonnes
This decision reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring food security while also participating in international trade, thereby meeting the food needs of several nations. It provides an opportunity for India to contribute to the global food market while safeguarding domestic supply.
