Uniform Civil Code: Continue The Debate

A uniform civil Code demonstrates that one country has one rule that must be followed by all strict networks. It implies an established system of legislation governing personal matters such as marriage, separation, Child custody, legacy, and succession for all country citizens.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi created a political storm with his remarks on the Uniform Common Code (UCC). PM Modi told booth-level labourers of his party in Bhopal on June 27th that India needs UCC since “the country couldn’t function with the dual system of separate laws for separate communities.”

On June 14, the 22nd Law Commission of India invited opinions of religious bodies and the general public on the issue of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Section 4 (DPSP), Article 44 of the Indian Constitution contains the UCC. Article 44 says, “The State shall endeavor to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India.”

Currently, India’s personal laws are fairly complex and varied, with each faith adhering to its own set of rules. UCC will affect not only Muslims, but also Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Christians, Parsis, Jews, and other minorities and tribals.

“The (Central government) should think about the country, its diversity — people of all religions live here, and Muslims have their own Shariat law,” Abdullah remarked. They should ponder about it frequently, and realize that if they take action, it may cause a storm (UCC).”

Due to the diversity of Indian societies, Congress supports UCC, but it must be implemented after professional consultations with all stakeholder.  It has the potential to increase communal tension in India.

Congress leaders accused PM Modi of using the UCC issue to divert attention away from other pressing matters such as inflation, being unemployed, and the situation in Manipur.
