RILEM (International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems, and Structures) has named Professor Ravindra Gettu of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) a ‘Honorary Member’.
This award is notable since he was the first Asian to serve as RILEM President from 2018 to 2021 in the organization’s 78-year existence. His leadership was critical in encouraging scientific collaboration among the hurdles faced by the COVID-19 epidemic.
As a VS Raju Chair Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Professor Gettu has been instrumental in advancing the use of Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC) in India, overseeing the construction of 500 km of tunnels lined with this innovative material. Additionally, around 30 laboratories dedicated to FRC testing have been established in the country.
His work has also led to the construction of approximately 19 million square meters of slabs-on-grade for various applications, including factories and warehouses.
Professor Gettu’s vision emphasises the practical application of new technologies in the construction sector to enhance quality and sustainability. Current projects he is working on include textile-reinforced concrete and sustainability assessments in construction.
Future initiatives will focus on utilizing precast and prefinished components to improve building quality, minimize waste, extend longevity, and reduce environmental impact.
Expressing his gratitude for the recognition, Professor Gettu stated, “Pride, Enthusiasm, and Inclusivity – these three words describe my feelings about RILEM.” He acknowledged the significant opportunity to lead a prominent organization in construction materials research during a time of expansion. He also noted the transition to online communications during the pandemic, which provided remote researchers with a platform to share their work and insights.
Founded in June 1947, RILEM is dedicated to fostering scientific cooperation in construction materials and structures globally. The organisation awards the title of Honorary Member to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to its mission. Prof. Gettu’s exemplary leadership in transitioning RILEM to online platforms during the pandemic earned him this esteemed recognition.
Professor Gettu’s research spans various fields, including the fracture mechanics of concrete and rock, the nonlinear behaviour of cement-based materials, and sustainability in construction practices. With over 500 publications to his name, including more than 130 peer-reviewed journal articles, he has significantly contributed to applied research in the field, supported by funding from public organisations and the construction industry.
