IIT Madras Hosts Quantum Tech Titans

The Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras is hosting the 16th International Conference on Quantum Communication, Measurement, and Computing (QCMC 2024) from August 26 to 30, 2024, marking the first time this prestigious event is held in India. The conference, organized by the Centre for Quantum Information, Communication, and Computing (CQuICC), a Centre of Excellence at IIT Madras, is taking place at the IIT Madras Research Park.

Established in 1990, QCMC is one of the most renowned global platforms for experts in quantum information science and technology, bringing together leading scientists and engineers to discuss advancements in quantum computing, communication, cryptography, and sensing. The 2024 conference is supported by IIT Madras, Mphasis F1 Foundation, and KLA.

During the conference’s inaugural session, Ajai Chowdhury, Chairman of the Mission Governing Board for the National Quantum Mission, discussed India’s increasing involvement in quantum technology. Dr Chowdhury highlighted the significant progress in quantum research at IIT Madras and noted the active participation of around 600 Indian scientists and 40 to 50 startups in the quantum field.

He emphasized the National Quantum Mission’s efforts to develop all areas of quantum technology, revealing that over 385 proposals have been received to establish thematic parks focusing on computing, communications, sensing, and materials.

IIT Madras is recognized as a leader in quantum research in India, thanks to the establishment of CQuICC, which focuses on areas like quantum cryptography, quantum sensing, quantum information theory, and quantum networks. The institute is crucial in advancing India’s National Quantum Mission by fostering innovation and developing indigenous quantum technologies.

Speaking at the event, Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, expressed enthusiasm about hosting the conference in India for the first time. He discussed the importance of quantum technologies in solving complex problems that traditional computing struggles to address, emphasizing the potential for quantum approaches to offer scalable and efficient solutions.
