Millions of people worldwide suffer from anemia, a widespread health condition characterized by a lack of red blood cells or haemoglobin, which causes fatigue, weakness, and other serious health complications. Recent research conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur in partnership with Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospitals has shed fresh light on this ailment, notably its diagnosis and treatment.
This collaborative initiative focuses on creating novel solutions to the difficulties of anemia in underserved groups. The clinical knowledge and broad healthcare network of Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospitals, along with IIT Kharagpur’s proficiency in biomedical engineering and state-of-the-art technology, have cleared the path for developments in non-invasive diagnostic instruments and economical methods of treatment.
Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospitals, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, is set to revolutionize maternal and child health with the launch of an AI-based anaemia screening initiative. This groundbreaking technology will be deployed across Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Mother & Child Hospitals (Mamatva centres) in several states of India.
Anaemia, a significant public health issue affecting pregnant women and children, will now be detected using a non-invasive smartphone application. The technology uses eye images to estimate haemoglobin levels through machine learning algorithms, offering a highly accurate, on-demand diagnostic tool that could replace traditional blood-based laboratory tests.
In the pilot phase, six Mamatva centres will screen 100,000 pregnant women each for anaemia detection. This initiative is expected to improve antenatal care in remote areas and equip field workers with a reliable diagnostic tool.
Mr. C Sreenivas, Chairman of Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospitals, emphasized the potential of AI to transform healthcare at the grassroots level. Sunil Gavaskar, the renowned cricketer, praised the initiative for its innovative approach and significant impact on maternal and child health.
