Police claimed a 21-year-old post-graduate student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) was discovered dead in her hostel room on the campus in Telangana’s Sangareddy district late Monday.
On July 26, she began her master’s course in civil engineering as a first-year post-graduate student. M Rajesh Naik, sub-inspector of police in Sangareddy (rural), informed reporters that she was discovered hanging in her room by other pupils around 10 p.m., and they immediately alerted the police.
“We recovered a suicide note from her room in which the student scribbled a two-line statement in Odia, saying that nobody was responsible for her death and that she was under severe mental pressure,” Naik explained.
She is the second IIT-H student to commit suicide in the previous three weeks, and the fourth in a year.
A second-year engineering student from Telangana’s Nalgonda district went missing from campus on July 17. On July 25, his body was discovered washed up on the beach of Visakhapatnam.
According to a senior staff member at IIT-H who declined to be quoted, the institute has a full-fledged counselling center with psychologists who regularly advise students to assist them cope with stress. “Yet, such incidents continue to occur from time to time,” he stated.
