The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kozhikode is considering London or Singapore as the next location for its flagship annual conference, ‘Globalizing Indian Thought’. “We are in touch with our alumni base, and are considering holding the next edition in either London or Singapore – wherever it is economically viable,” Prof Debashis Chatterjee, director of IIM Kozhikode, told FE on the sidelines of the just ended 2023 edition in Mysuru.
‘Globalizing Indian Thought’ is a one-of-a-kind conference that brings together researchers, practitioners, students, and policymakers to discuss how to improve management and leadership in India, celebrate the Indian ethos, and educate the world about India’s economic successes.
The first three editions were held on the campus, and the fourth one in Mysuru. “We’ve just successfully organised it outside the campus, and it has given us the confidence to hold it outside the country as well,” Prof Chatterjee said.
Sanjeev Sanyal, member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, and Kinji Saito, director & senior management officer, Suzuki Motor, Japan, launched the Mysuru edition, which was attended by Chandra Shekhar Ghosh (Bandhan Bank) and Tessy Thomas (missile lady of India), among others. There were 148 abstract submissions, with 106 articles chosen for examination. In the end, 90 papers were approved, and 73 were delivered during the course of the three-day event. Academics, academics, diplomats, and students from over 20 nations took part.
“The objective is to tell the world about Indian knowledge systems, culture and management,” stated Prof. Chatterjee. “Our human-centric perspective, which differs from the West’s systems-centric perspective, contributes significantly to our business achievements.”The value and vibrancy of India’s soft power is yet to manifest, and the aim of conferences like these is to make India count on the world stage, again. Until now, we invited the world to this conference. Next year, we will go to the world.”
‘Globalizing Indian Thought’ has motivated other business schools to investigate Indian knowledge systems as well. IIM Bangalore and Chanakya University collaborated earlier this year to create three MOOCs on the SWAYAM platform: Indian Knowledge System (IKS): Concepts and Applications in Engineering, IKS: Concepts and Applications in Science, and IKS: Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Ministry of Education formed a 22-member high-powered IKS committee last year – a cell designed to support research on all elements of IKS, as well as conserve and distribute IKS for future study and social uses.
