Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) introduced the ‘Swayam Prabha’ channel, a set of 40 DTH channels that broadcast educational programming 24 hours a day, seven days a week via the GSAT-15 satellite.
Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, the minister of state for external affairs and education, introduced the channel-based counselling in Manipuri.
The choice to incorporate Manipuri was made for students who wish to be taught in their own language. According to the institution, fresh content will be streamed at least four hours per day and will be rebroadcast five times per day for the convenience of students.
“The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes teaching in the mother tongue, and the initiative of IGNOU in channel-based teaching in the mother tongue is seen as a major intervention in this direction,” Rajkumar Ranjan Singh remarked.
He went on to say that the “inauguration of channel-based counselling in Manipuri language will open up opportunities of education in mother tongue for the large population of Manipuri diaspora living in other parts of the world” .
“Multilingualism is being promoted by IGNOU as per the mandate of NEP 2020, and University has been focusing in a big way for developing content in different languages,” said Nageshwar Rao, vice-chancellor of IGNOU.
The presentation was broadcast live on the university’s “Swayam Prabha” channel as well as other media channels like as YouTube and Facebook.
More than 700 students, educators, IGNOU vice-chancellors and pro-vice chancellors, and other top executives attended the event to promote Manipuri.
