The Indian Council of Agriculture Research and Thünen Institute are organizing an International Workshop on Food Loss and Waste Prevention in the South Asian Region from 30th October to 1st November 2023.
The workshop will address issues such as the assessment and impact of post-harvest losses and food waste, prevention of post-harvest losses in the supply chain, prevention of food waste in households and community activities, and the role of food bank networks and circular economy. The workshop will involve stakeholders from South Asian countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Maldives.
Participants will discuss the impact of food loss and waste on the economy, environment, and society in the region and share knowledge on methodologies to measure and assess food loss and waste. The workshop will also include panel discussions on various issues and available solutions, followed by visits to organizations that have successfully addressed the issue of post-harvest losses and food wastage.
Post-harvest losses and food waste vary among geographies and depend on factors such as crops, commodities, storage duration, climate, technological interventions, human behavior, and traditions. The workshop aims to address the challenges of food loss and waste, particularly in the South Asian region, which is a major food producer and consumer.
