Hurun India Philanthropy List 2024: Top Donors and Rankings Revealed

HCL Technologies founder Shiv Nadar and his family have maintained their ranking as India’s largest donors on the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2024 with a donation of ₹2,153 crore. Their donation was mostly dedicated toward education.

Mukesh Ambani and family are the top five donors, followed by the Bajaj family, Kumar Mangalam Birla and family, and Gautam Adani and family. This year, these benefactors made almost 53% of all contributions in India, amounting to over ₹ 4,625 crore.

The report, compiled by Hurun Research, also shows an increase in high-value donations, with 18 philanthropists donating over ₹ 100 crore each – up from only two in 2018. Among them, Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha, at 38, is noted as the youngest with a donation exceeding ₹ 100 crore. Rohini Nilekani, contributing ₹ 154 crore, stands out as the most generous woman on the list.

  • Susmita & Subroto Bagchi – ₹ 179 crore – Public Healthcare
  • Rohini Nilekani – ₹ 154 crore – Ecosystem Building

The number of philanthropists donating over â‚¹ 50 crore increased by 125 per cent since 2019, while those donating over â‚¹ 20 crore have risen by 128 per cent during the same period, according to the list.

Regarding philanthropic approaches, 113 of the participants have set up foundations to oversee their philanthropic donations, while 91 of them spend their CSR money through partnerships with NGOs. 96 new people were added to the list this year, and their combined donations came to ₹ 1,556 crore. There are 21 female philanthropists on the list as well.

Over the previous five years, the number of donors who have contributed more than ₹10 crore rose from 80 to 117, a 48 percent rise. With 123 benefactors contributing a total of ₹3,680 crore to education, it continues to be the most popular cause. This year, there are 109 self-made philanthropists, a significant 43 rise over the previous year.
