In a distressing incident, the Hindu community in Karachi woke up to the demolition of their sacred Mari Mata Temple, which had stood for 150 years in Soldier Bazaar. The operation reportedly took place late Friday night, exploiting the absence of electricity in the area. Witnesses observed diggers and bulldozers tearing down the temple’s interior while leaving the outer walls and main gate intact.
Residents also claimed to have seen a police vehicle providing cover for those operating the bulldozers and other equipment, suggesting some level of official involvement. The Mari Mata Temple, located near the Soldier Bazaar police station on Mukhi Chohitram Road, held significant historical and cultural value.
Shri Ram Nath Mishra Maharaj of Shri Panch Mukhi Hanuman Mandir, another neighboring temple, described the Mari Mata Temple as an ancient structure believed to have been constructed over a century and a half ago. There were even rumors of buried treasures within its courtyard. The temple covered a considerable area of 400 to 500 square yards and had reportedly been a target for encroachers for some time.
Due to concerns about the temple’s deteriorating condition, the management of the Madarsi Hindu community had temporarily relocated most of the deities to a small room near the stormwater train. However, despite their efforts, the temple was ultimately razed to the ground.
Allegations have arisen concerning the forced eviction of the Madrasi Hindu group by two individuals named Imran Hashmi and Rekha (also known as Nagin Bai). Additionally, discussions have surfaced regarding the temple’s sale to another party for a sum of 70 million Pakistani Rupees (PKR) and plans to construct a commercial structure on the site. Concerns have also been raised about forged documents relating to the transformation of the temple’s lease from an amenity plot to a commercial one under an individual named Navaid.
The Hindu community has called upon the Pakistan-Hindu Council, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, and the Inspector General of Sindh Police to take immediate note of the incident and initiate an investigation. The demolition of the historic Mari Mata Temple has sparked outrage and demands for justice among the affected community.
