High Demand for Pioneering B.S. Course in Sciences and Technology at IIT Madras, 30 Seats Attract 9,000 Applicants

Nearly 9,000 students from all over the nation have applied for the recently launched four-year multidisciplinary B.S. course in Sciences and Technology at IIT Madras, which has just 30 seats available. The initial batch will begin on July 31. The program in engineering and medical sciences is the first of its kind in India.

According to Boby George, head of the Department of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Madras, profiles are arriving from all across the nation.

To prepare students for designing life-saving medical technologies, drug discovery, using artificial intelligence in medicine, and basic medical research, the course uses an interdisciplinary approach. The department will set the groundwork for the training of physician-scientists in India by teaching doctors how to use technology effectively in clinical practice.

The head of the department emphasizes the course’s unique nature, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the human body, medical and biological aspects, and engineering skills. Specialization options include AI for medicine, device development, medical imaging, and pharmacology.

The IISER Aptitude Test 2023 will select candidates based on their IAT rank. The course aims to equip scientists and engineers with skills for medical research, integrating medical education and engineering to introduce innovative practices in clinical settings. Top medical doctors will serve as ‘Professors of Practice’, establishing tie-ups with top hospitals and medical institutions.

In order to establish a new specialty in India, the MIOT Institute of Nephrology is introducing a four-year B.S. in Medical Sciences and Engineering program. The program aims to give engineers a clinical understanding of engineering and to teach clinicians how to approach the human body. The department will have ‘Professors of Practice’ who are eminent medical professionals.

“This is a great step in finding solutions to common problems that we do not have that often go to market strategies,” said Wilson Thomas, managing director of Carl Zeiss India. These students can be absorbed by one of the several medical enterprises functioning in India that produce medical devices, solutions, and software.
