Former Pakistan cricketer Hasan Raza has once again ignited a controversy, this time accusing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of manipulating the Decision Review System (DRS) during the ongoing World Cup 2023. Raza’s claims, which come on the heels of his earlier “suspicious balls” allegation, have sent shockwaves through the cricketing world.
After India’s commanding 243-run victory over South Africa, in which Ravindra Jadeja emerged as the star with a remarkable five-wicket haul, Raza seized the moment to question the legitimacy of a DRS decision during the match. The incident in question involved Jadeja’s dismissal of Heinrich Klaasen, which Raza argued was highly questionable.
Raza asserted that the on-field umpire had initially rejected the appeal, only for India to opt for a review following Jadeja’s insistence. The replay showed the ball pitching on the leg stump and straightening enough to hit the leg-stump. “How is that possible?” Raza asked. He expressed his concern that DRS was being manipulated and called for a closer examination of such occurrences.
The former cricketer, with 23 international appearances for Pakistan to his name, also harked back to a DRS incident from Pakistan’s match against South Africa, where Tabraiz Shamsi had survived a close call against a delivery from Haris Rauf. Raza further highlighted the advantage that home teams seem to enjoy, recalling the infamous delivery from Saeed Ajmal during the 2011 World Cup against the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
Raza’s allegations have raised eyebrows across the cricketing community, with some questioning the integrity of the DRS system and its susceptibility to manipulation. Raza emphasized that these incidents were not isolated and had occurred in recent matches, suggesting a pattern of favorable decisions in home conditions.
As the controversy surrounding Raza’s claims continues to unfold, the cricketing world awaits responses from the concerned authorities and organizations. These allegations have added an unexpected layer of drama to an already captivating World Cup, leaving fans and experts alike wondering about the authenticity and fairness of the decisions made through DRS.
