Union Minister Anurag Thakur announced the government’s decision to increase the subsidy amount for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries from 200 to 300 per LPG cylinder on Wednesday during a briefing on Cabinet decisions.
Ujjwala beneficiaries currently pay ₹703 per 14.2-kg cylinder as against the market price of ₹903. After the decision of the Union Cabinet, they will now pay ₹603.
The decision was made just one month after the Centre lowered the cost of household cooking gas cylinders by 200 rupees for all consumers. Following the August judgment, Thakur stated that there may be an additional financial impact of 7,680 crore for the fiscal year 2023–2024 as a result of this supplemental subsidy.

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), launched on May 1, 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, aims to give rural households access to cooking fuel such as LPG. The program’s main goal is to provide LPG connections to women from BPL households, SC/ST communities, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and Antyoday Anna Yojana (AAY) recipients, forest residents, and other underprivileged groups.
The extension of PMUY for the delivery of 75 lakh LPG connections over three years, from the financial year 2023–24 to 2025–26, was agreed by the Union Cabinet last month. The 10.35 crore PMUY beneficiaries will now total 75 lakh additional Ujjwala connections.
Prior to the assembly elections in five states, a decision on additional subsidies for Ujjawala beneficiaries was made. This year, elections are scheduled for Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh.
