The formation of the first all-female battalion in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has been formally approved by the government, according to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday.
Shah emphasized this as an important step in achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of increasing women’s involvement in nation-building in a post on X.
“In a firm step towards realizing Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of enhancing women’s participation in every field of nation-building, the Modi government has approved the establishment of the first all-women battalion of the CISF. To be raised as an elite troop, the Mahila Battalion will shoulder the responsibility of protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure, like airports and metro rails, and providing VIP security as commandos. This decision will undoubtedly inspire more women to contribute to the vital task of safeguarding the nation”, he said.
The CISF, which is well-known for its role in protecting critical national infrastructure, has long been a popular choice for women seeking to join the Central Armed Police Force. Women now make up more over 7% of the force, and the formation of the Mahila Battalion is anticipated to inspire young women across India to join the CISF and play important roles in national security operations.
Preparations establishing the new battalion have already begun, with the CISF Headquarters focusing on recruiting, training, and determining the best site for the unit’s headquarters. The Mahila Battalion’s unique training program is being built to assure the force’s preparedness to execute a variety of missions, including VIP security and protection of critical infrastructure such as airports and the Delhi Metro Rail.
During the 53rd CISF Day festivities, Shah spearheaded the formation of an all-female battalion inside the CISF. This decision is regarded as a watershed moment, not only empowering women in the security services but also paving the path for increased gender inclusiveness in historically male-dominated essential roles.
