Google Ditches Passwords, Switches to ‘Passkeys’ for Login

Google is introducing a new login method called ‘passkeys’ that aims to replace traditional passwords. Passkeys are special numbers or authentication methods that can be used to access your accounts. This method includes using PIN-like numbers, facial recognition, or fingerprint scans for logging in.

Passkeys provide a faster and more secure way to access your accounts, according to Google. The system relies on advanced cryptography to enhance security. When users create passkeys, they use a fingerprint, face scan, or PIN to unlock their devices. Google claims this method will be 40% faster than traditional password logins.

Users will start seeing prompts to create and use passkeys when signing in to their accounts. Making passkeys the default option for personal Google accounts, simplifying future sign-ins. While passkeys offer several advantages, the site will still allow users to use passwords as an option for signing in, and users can opt-out of passkeys if they prefer the traditional password method.

Passkeys are designed to eliminate the need to remember complex passwords with numbers and special characters, offering a more user-friendly and secure alternative. It also emphasizes that passkeys are resistant to phishing attacks, enhancing online security.

This change reflects Google’s efforts to improve the login experience and offer users a more secure and convenient way to access their accounts while reducing the reliance on traditional passwords.
