Google Maps now recognizes both “India” and “Bharat” as a “Country in South Asia,” allowing users to use either term to access the official Indian map. This change extends beyond Google Maps and includes various other Google products such as Search, Translator, and News.
Regardless of whether you use Google Maps in Hindi or English, entering “Bharat” in the search box will yield the same result as searching for “India.” Both “India” and “Bharat” are now officially recognized as a “Country in South Asia,” providing users with the flexibility to choose their preferred term when exploring the Indian map.
In the Hindi version of Google Maps, the term “भारत” is displayed, while the English version shows search results for “India.” The text descriptions remain consistent in both languages. This update aligns with the central government’s gradual shift toward using “Bharat” in official communications.
Google has extended this dual recognition of “Bharat” and “India” to various products, including Search, Translator, and News. While there has been no official statement from Google regarding this change, a simple search reveals the adjustments made in the background.
Notably, the railway ministry proposed replacing “India” with “Bharat” in all official content submitted to the Union Cabinet, marking a significant shift.
For Indian Google users, particularly those using the Hindi language, Google now prefers “भारत” over “इंडिया.” The English to Hindi translation consistently displays “India” in English and “भारत” in Hindi. Google Translate also offers alternative translations for “India,” such as “हिंदुस्तान” and “भारतवर्ष.”
This update is gradually rolling out to users, and it may take some time before it becomes visible to all users.
