Sunny Deol’s film “Gadar 2” has overtaken the box office performance of “Pathaan” to become the highest-grossing Hindi film in India. The competition between “Gadar 2” and “Jawan” to surpass “Pathaan” had been closely watched, and now, “Gadar 2” has secured the top position, grossing ₹524.75 crore nett in India.
Shah Rukh Khan’s action thriller “Pathaan,” released in January of the same year, had held the title of the highest-grossing Hindi movie for several months. The battle for the top spot was between Shah Rukh Khan’s “Jawan,” a recent blockbuster released on September 7, and Sunny Deol’s “Gadar 2,” which hit theaters on August 11.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the exciting news on social media, stating, “Gadar 2 crosses the lifetime business of Pathaan’s Hindi version [₹524.53 crore] in India… Now no. 1 HIGHEST GROSSING FILM in Hindi in India…”
Here’s a breakdown of “Gadar 2’s” box office performance:
- Week 1: ₹284.63 crore
- Week 2: ₹134.47 crore
- Week 3: ₹63.35 crore
- Week 4: ₹27.55 crore
- Week 5: ₹7.28 crore
- Week 6: ₹4.72 crore
- Weekend 7: ₹2.75 crore (till Wednesday)
- Total: ₹524.75 crore nett in India
Meanwhile, “Jawan” is steadily making its way towards the ₹600 crore mark in India and has collected ₹579.93 crore nett in all languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
“Gadar 2” is a sequel to the 2001 hit film “Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.” In the movie, Sunny Deol portrays the character of Tara Singh, an Indian truck driver, while Ameesha Patel plays the role of Sakeena, a Pakistani woman.
Earlier this month, the makers of “Gadar 2” celebrated its remarkable success with a grand party in Mumbai, attended by renowned actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Varun Dhawan, Dharmendra, Sidharth Malhotra, Kiara Advani, and Shilpa Shetty, among others. Sunny Deol’s son and actor, Karan Deol, also shared exclusive inside pictures from the event.
