In response to the recent ban on Halal-certified products in Uttar Pradesh, food safety officials conducted a raid at Sahara Mall in Lucknow to ensure compliance with the prohibition. The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) team examined various products, including cold drinks, meat, and dry fruits, to check for Halal certification. As a result of the inspection, the FSDA registered a case against eight companies.
The ban, announced by the Uttar Pradesh government, encompasses the production, storage, distribution, and sale of food, medicines, and cosmetic items with Halal certification in the state. The decision was made in the interest of public health and to prevent confusion. The Uttar Pradesh Food Commissioner’s order explicitly states that the production, storage, distribution, and sale of Halal-certified edible items are prohibited with immediate effect.
The government emphasized strict actions against those who violate the ban, although goods with Halal certification intended for export are exempted. The ban follows cases filed by Uttar Pradesh Police against several companies for selling ‘Halal certified’ products using fraudulent documents.
