Female Labour Force Participation Rate Jumps to 37.0%

According to the ‘usual status’ concept of measuring labour force participation, the Periodic Labour Force Survey Report 2022–23, which was released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on October 9, 2023, reveals that the female labour force participation rate in the nation has significantly increased by 4.2 percentage points to 37.0% in 2023.

As a result of the government’s determined strategy to ensure women’s empowerment through policy initiatives aimed at their long-term socio-economic and political growth, the female labour force participation rate has increased significantly.

The government has launched numerous programmes to support women throughout their lives, including extensive programmes for girls’ education, skill development, entrepreneurship support, and workplace safety. The government’s objective for “women-led development” has been driven by policies and legislation in several areas.

Periodic Labour Force Survey: What Is It?

The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), an extensive national survey, is carried out by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), an agency of the Government of India’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. Data collection on all elements of employment and unemployment in India is its main goal.

The labour force, which includes both the working and unemployed population, is the subject of the PLFS, which strives to offer comprehensive information about it. It collects information on employment status, industry, occupation, kind of employment, level of education, and other relevant factors. The survey is regularly carried out and includes both urban and rural areas.
