In a significant declaration, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promised to spearhead the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure, hospitals, and schools in Gaza, contingent upon the achievement of a ceasefire. Erdogan made this commitment following his return from Berlin, where he engaged in talks with German leaders.
“If a ceasefire is reached, we will do whatever is necessary to compensate for the destruction caused by Israel,” Erdogan asserted. He emphasized Turkey’s commitment to rebuilding Gaza’s infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and water and energy facilities that have been ravaged during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Erdogan also took a diplomatic initiative by calling on Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly disclose whether Israel possesses nuclear weapons. “As Turkey, we are making this call. Israel’s nuclear weapons must be inspected beyond doubt before it is too late. We will follow up on this,” Erdogan declared.
Notably, Erdogan has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in the region, previously stating that Hamas, the group governing Gaza, is not a terrorist organization but rather a “liberation group” defending its territory. He criticized Western support for Israel’s retaliation against Hamas, describing it as a manifestation of deceit.
Adding to the diplomatic efforts, Erdogan revealed that he had received a letter from the families of Israelis held hostage by Hamas, requesting his intervention for their release. In response, Turkey’s intelligence agency has been mobilized to investigate the matter, according to reports from Reuters.
Meanwhile, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, labeling them a “crime against humanity.”
As the conflict persists and Israel continues to bombard Gaza City, Erdogan’s commitment to reconstruction and diplomatic overtures underscores Turkey’s active role in seeking a resolution to the Israel-Hamas war. The international community continues to closely monitor developments in the region amid escalating tensions and humanitarian concerns.
