Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane best known for his role of Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid in ‘Harry Potter’ films passes away at the age of 72. James Bond and Cracker star died at a hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland. The award-winning actor had been suffering from ill health for the past two years.

Veteran actor Robbie Coltrane played Hagrid, the half-giant and a dear friend to the troublesome trio -- Harry, Hermione, and Ron -- in the "Harry Potter" films. His onscreen chemistry with Daniel Radcliffe has always been a much-admired one.

The news of Coltrane’s death came as a big shock for people all across the globe. A fan wrote, “Very sad news that the lovely Robbie Coltrane has passed away. I have adored him for 26 years.”

“Robbie Coltrane, always our Rubeus Hagrid forever in our hearts.. still can't believe he's gone... RIP Robbie,” wrote another fan.

Coltrane was born Anthony Robert McMillan on March 30, 1950, in Rutherglen, a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, UK. His mother, Jean Ross (Howie), was a teacher and pianist. His father, Ian Baxter McMillan, was a general surgeon who also worked for police pathology. Young Robbie was fond of art, music, films and cars. He was a voracious reader of his dad's books on medicine and crime. At age 12 he made his acting debut on stage at Glenalmond College, delivering rants from ‘Henry V’. At that time he was fascinated with Marlon Brando and Orson Welles.
