Tesla CEO Elon Musk has issued a cautionary statement regarding the financial stability of traditional automakers such as General Motors (GM), Ford, and Stellantis. Musk’s warning is linked to the demands made by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union for higher wages, suggesting that these demands could lead to dire consequences for these automotive giants.
Elon Musk’s warning coincides with an ongoing strike organized by the UAW against the “Big Three” Detroit automakers—GM, Ford, and Stellantis NV. The UAW represents workers from these companies, and their wage demands have sparked concerns about the financial health of these established automakers.
Patrick Kaser, a portfolio manager for Brandywine Global, shared similar concerns recently, emphasizing that meeting the UAW’s demands could result in significant competitive setbacks for these companies.

The UAW initially sought a substantial 40% pay increase but later moderated their expectations to a 36% wage hike. The union is concerned about the impact of electric vehicles (EVs), which require fewer components and fewer workers, potentially leading to job losses and decreased wages in the industry. They have also expressed worries about attempts to unionize workers in EV-focused companies like Tesla.
Pure electric vehicle manufacturers like Tesla, Lucid Group, and Rivian Automotive differ from traditional automakers in that they are not unionized. These companies often rely on employee stock purchase plans and restricted stock units for compensation.
Tesla has faced legal challenges and allegations of labor law violations in the past, including accusations of interfering with union supporters and firing an activist at their Fremont plant. Tesla is currently appealing a 2021 ruling that found the company violated labor laws. Additionally, Tesla has faced allegations of dismissing employees in response to a union campaign at their Buffalo, New York facility.
Despite previous challenges, legal scholars believe that increased gains for UAW workers and growing public support for unions may lead to renewed efforts to unionize Tesla’s workforce.
