According to PTI, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Wednesday that elections for the 12 open Rajya Sabha seats will be held on September 3.
Following the election of the current members, which included Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Jyotiraditya Scindia, to the Lok Sabha, ten Rajya Sabha seats became available. According to the Commission, the notice for the Rajya Sabha elections will be sent out on August 14 and the poll papers must be submitted by August 21.
According to the announcement by the ECI, the separate elections for each Rajya Sabha seat will be held on September 3 and the results will be announced on the same day. The last date for the withdrawal of nominations is likely to be August 26-27.
The polling will be held on September 3 from 9 am to 4 pm and counting of votes will be held on September 3 at 5 pm.
Out of the total 12 seats vacant in the Rajya Sabha, 2 each are from Assam, Bihar and Maharashtra; 1 each from Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tripura, Telangana and Odisha.
Bypolls are also being held for two seats in Telangana and Odisha.
K Keshava Rao from Telangana resigned recently from the House after quitting the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to join the Congress while Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Mamata Mohanta resigned from her Rajya Sabha seat and primary membership of the party.
