External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the importance of education in India’s global engagement, highlighting the University of Southampton’s plans to establish its first campus in India under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The policy, which champions internationalisation, aims to position India as a global player in education and aims to elevate India’s standards to the highest global level.
The initiative will help establish a strong international footprint of India in the education sphere and prepare young Indians for the global workplace, as new technologies and services demands are harmonized with demographic deficits.
Jaishankar believes that the University of Southampton will bring a wealth of knowledge, innovation, and expertise to India, benefiting students by expanding their educational and research horizons, prompting a culture of knowledge exchange, and encouraging enterprise and engagement on a global scale. Cooperation in education has been a major path of the India-UK roadmap 2030, with MoUs on mutual recognition of academic qualifications between the two countries.
The Young Professional Scheme (YPS) jointly announced by the two governments provides a unique opportunity for young graduates in both countries to learn and benefit from each other’s institutions. The collaboration extends to cutting-edge research programs like the UK-India research initiatives and the Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC), bringing together the brightest minds from both countries to tackle pressing challenges. Faculty mobility through the Global Initiative of Academic Network (GIAN) further enriches this collaboration.
In an increasingly interconnected and globalized world, it is essential that young Indians are well-informed and attended to global developments. The presence of international universities and foreign students on Indian campuses will make an important contribution to this cultural exchange and foster a spirit of global understanding and cooperation.
