Eating Less and Weight Loss: Why It May Not Work

One of the most common myths people subscribe to while trying to lose weight is that eating less will definitely help in trimming inches. But that might just not be the case. , slashing too many calories into one’s diet is definitely not the way to losing weight. Here’s why:

1. Starvation Mode: In cases of extreme low-calorie intake, your body will be induced into a different kind of survival mode in which it will bring down the metabolic rate to conserve more energy and fat. This would mean that it can get tougher to burn more pounds. Sometimes, this might even result in increased weight since the body is better at storing less energy obtained.

2. Muscle loss: Too little food makes you lose muscle. Since muscle requires more calories to function than fat, a loss of muscle translates to a slower metabolic rate. It essentially means that at a lower metabolic rate, you are burning fewer calories during the day, and this clearly turns weight loss into a far more difficult task and weight gain into an easier one.

3. Cortisol Production Increase: Dieting is stressful, and increased levels of cortisol result in weight gain, particularly around the tummy. Cortisol spikes will push the body to store fat.

4. Adaptive Thermogenesis: Your body will end up cutting energy usage more than expected when you cut the calories. This is another way your body fights back against starvation, but it makes shedding weight even harder.

Cutting back on food isn’t always the answer to losing weight. You could end up losing muscle mass, increase stress, and slow your metabolism, which usually tends to make weight loss harder at the end. Instead of severely restricting calorie intake, aim for a balanced diet and regular exercise to give you a healthier way toward weight loss.
