The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) invites educators and supporters to join a demonstration at the University Grants Commission (UGC) on October 16, 2024, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.
The protest is intended to address various serious concerns impacting instructors at Delhi University and its affiliated colleges.
The key demands of the protest include:
Takeover of Delhi Government-maintained colleges: DUTA advocates for the integration of government-maintained colleges under Delhi University’s administration, emphasising the need for better governance and resources.
Funding through UGC: Participants will call for increased funding allocations from the UGC to support the educational infrastructure and ensure quality education in all the institutes.
Sanction EWS expansion positions: The protest seeks the approval of new positions for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) to ensure equitable opportunities for all students.
Counting of full past service for promotions: DUTA demands that past service should be fully counted for the purpose of promotions, which they argue is essential for fair career progression.
One-time relaxation for professorship: The association is requesting a one-time relaxation in criteria for obtaining professorship, to aid those who may face challenges meeting the existing requirements.
Withdrawal of UGC CARE list: Educators are asking for the UGC to withdraw its controversial CARE list, which they believe undermines the academic integrity of certain institutions.
Retirement age of librarians and PE teachers: The protest will also highlight the need to review the retirement age for these essential roles, advocating for better support for library and physical education (PE) services.
Opposition to HEFA loans: DUTA firmly stands against the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) loans, which they argue impose undue financial burdens on institutions.
Restoration of Old Pension Scheme (OPS): Teachers are urging the government to restore the OPS, providing a more secure retirement plan for educators.
Review of NEP Structure: DUTA calls for a comprehensive review of the National Education Policy (NEP) to ensure it meets the needs of students and educators alike.
Promotion Scheme for Instructors: The association seeks a structured promotion scheme for instructors, ensuring their contributions are recognized and rewarded.
As part of their rallying cry, DUTA emphasizes the importance of unity among teachers, urging all educators to participate in the ‘Teachers Unity March’ and stand together in advocating for their rights and the future of education in India.
“The protest seeks to influence policy and improve conditions within the educational landscape. DUTA encourages all concerned individuals to join in large numbers to amplify their collective voice and demand necessary changes,” said AK Baghi, president, DUTA.
