In an Instagram post, Dubai princess Shaikha Mahra Mohammed Rashed Al Maktoum announced her divorce from husband Sheikh Mana bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mana Al Maktoum.
The announcement came just two months after the couple welcomed their first child.
On July 16, the princess accused her husband of infidelity in her Instagram post and declared their divorce. The post read, “Dear Husband, as you are occupied with other companions, I hereby declare our divorce. I divorce you, I divorce you, and I divorce you. Take care. Your ex-wife.”
In Islamic law, the practice of instant divorce is known as “talaq-e-biddat.” This allows a husband to dissolve the marriage immediately by pronouncing “talaq” three times in one sitting.
Traditionally, this right to pronounce talaq was reserved for men in many interpretations of Islamic law. Women seeking a divorce, on the other hand, usually go through a different process called “khula,” where they request a divorce from their husband or a court.
In some places, women can include a clause in their marriage contract (nikahnama) that grants them the right to pronounce talaq as well.
The comments section of the princess’s post was flooded with messages from concerned well-wishers. Observers noted that her Instagram account no longer featured pictures with her husband, and both the princess and Sheikh Mana had unfollowed each other on the platform.
Shaikha Mahra married Sheikh Mana, an industrialist, in May 2023, and their daughter was born a year later. In June, Shaikha Mahra shared a cryptic post on Instagram showing her cradling her baby with the caption, “Just the two of us.”
Shaikha Mahra Mohammed Rashed Al Maktoum is the daughter of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the current ruler of Dubai, who also serves as the vice president and prime minister of the UAE.
