Donald Trump Pledges Peace in Russia-Ukraine War

US President-elect Donald Trump has stated that his government will focus on resolving the Russia-Ukraine war, lamenting the deaths in the conflict.

He also stated that his government will try to bring peace to Western Asia.

We will focus on the Middle East, as well as Russia and Ukraine. It has to end, Trump declared at an America First Policy Institute dinner held at his Mar-a-Lago home on Thursday night.

This was his first significant speech and public appearance after his surprising political victory in the November 5 presidential elections.

Russia and Ukraine’s got to stop. I saw a report today. Thousands of people over the last three days were killed. Thousands and thousands of people were killed. They happened to be soldiers, but whether they’re soldiers or they’re people sitting in towns, we’re going to work it, he said.

The President-elect has consistently said his priority is to end the war and stem what he characterizes as a drain on US resources, in the form of military aid to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Lisa Curtis, Trump’s former deputy assistant and National Security Council senior director for South and Central Asia from 2017 to 2021, said the war in Ukraine must conclude in a way that does not inspire other countries to unlawfully attack their neighbors.

President (elect) Trump has previously spoken more positively about (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin than other US presidents. He has also spoken about attempting to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Curtis stated, “We haven’t seen how he’ll do that yet.”

“I would simply say that it needs to be done so that Russia faces consequences for its actions,” Curtis told PTI in an interview.

It must be done in such a way that Russia does not attempt to repeat the process two or three years later, she stated.

“It needs to be done in a way that doesn’t encourage other US adversaries to try to illegally invade their neighbour’s territory,” said Curtis, who is presently a Senior Fellow and Director of the Indo-Pacific Security Programme at the Center for a New American Security think tank.
