In the ever-evolving world of beauty practices, South Korean K-Beauty products have gained significant popularity. However, traditional Chinese techniques like jade rollers and gua shas are also making their mark in beauty routines, embraced by countless women and even some men who desire defined cheekbones.
Gua sha is an ancient Chinese healing method that involves using a smooth-edged tool made of jade or quartz to apply repeated, unidirectional press strokes on the skin. When translated, ‘gua’ refers to the action of scratching the skin, while ‘sha’ represents the red rash that appears after the treatment.
Historically, gua shas have been employed to treat various conditions, from acute or chronic pain to respiratory problems, colds, flu, fever, and musculoskeletal issues like strains, spasms, or injuries.
The question that arises amid the praises for this technique is whether gua shas truly deliver on their promises, or if achieving those coveted chiseled cheekbones is an elusive dream like a mythical unicorn.
Dermatologists have varying opinions on the matter. Dr. Aanchal Panth suggests that while gua shas can effectively reduce facial puffiness, the prospect of reducing fat tissue in the face might remain unrealistic. On the other hand, Dr. Rinky Kapoor, a consultant dermatologist and dermato-surgeon at The Esthetic Clinics, Mumbai, disagrees. She believes that gua shas can aid in contouring and sculpting the jawline and cheekbones, although immediate results should not be expected. As they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day.
The key reason why gua shas effectively combat facial puffiness is by stimulating the lymph nodes, which are responsible for the swelling. Through gua sha massage, lymph circulation is enhanced, leading to drainage and reduced puffiness, as explained by Dr. Kapoor.
If you find yourself intrigued by the potential magic of gua shas and are eager to give them a try, hold on! Proper usage is crucial, and learning the correct techniques is essential before diving in.
