Indian badminton star Parupalli Kashyap recently shared his experience of meeting legendary cricketer MS Dhoni. Kashyap, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, is married to former world number one shuttler Saina Nehwal.
During a podcast appearance, Kashyap talked about meeting Dhoni at a wedding. Since not everyone knows him, he introduced himself as Saina’s husband. To his surprise, Dhoni recognized him and treated him like a friend and teammate.
Kashyap said, “I met Dhoni at a wedding and introduced myself as Saina’s husband. Dhoni replied, ‘I know who you are, you don’t need to tell me that you are Saina’s husband.’ He spoke to me like a friend.”
Dhoni, known as Thala, led India to three ICC trophies and Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles. He played 350 ODI matches, scoring 10,773 runs with an average of 50.58, and represented India in 90 Test matches, scoring nearly 5000 runs at an average of 38.09. In the IPL, he has scored over 5000 runs. Dhoni recently celebrated his 43rd birthday and retired from international cricket in 2020. He now only plays in the IPL.
Kashyap received the Arjuna Award in 2012 and became the first Indian men’s badminton player to reach the quarterfinals at the Olympics. He also won a gold medal in men’s singles at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
