Devender Yadav, a former MLA and AICC representative for Uttarakhand, is dominating the campaign against a field of competitors that includes city and central party office-bearers amid the strife with the AAP.
According to sources, a decision about the next Congress president for the nation’s capital will be made soon. Recently, prominent Delhi leaders participated in a one-on-one conversation with party chairman Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and K C Venugopal to get their opinions on the matter. Anil Chaudhary, the head of the DPCC, will soon be removed of his duties.
For the party position, Yadav is the front-runner. He was once an MLA and is now the AICC’s representative for Uttarakhand. However, according to insiders, the party plans to replace a number of the incharges in the upcoming days, including those who were included in the Congress Working Committee’s announcement on Sunday. It might result in the CWC list being reduced.
Congress spokesman Deepender Hooda responded to criticism that the party did not adhere to the rule that 50% of members in party committees like the CWC must be under 50 years old by saying that the new CWC strikes a balance between all the sections and has received strong praise everywhere.
Sandeep Dikshit, a former politician and the son of the late chief minister Sheila Dikshit, is seeking for the position in Delhi. He was excluded from the CWC, which also included a few other Delhi officials, including Alka Lamba, a young woman who recently made headlines for criticising the AAP and ruling out an alliance with the organisation led by Arvind Kejriwal for the Lok Sabha elections. Many predict that Dikshit, who is not known for keeping quiet, will become enraged by the exclusion.
AICC office holders Abhishek Dutt, Manish Chatrath, Rajesh Lilothia, former Delhi minister Raj Kumar Chouhan, and former Union minister Krishna Tirath are some of the other candidates for the Delhi chief’s position. It has been heard that veteran J P Aggarwal has decided not to run, therefore it will be interesting to see if the party still considers him. He was recently relieved of his Madhya Pradesh responsibility and dismissed from the CWC.
Several states will soon have new AICC managers, according to sources, and attention is focused on the new tasks given to party general secretaries and incharges. New general secretaries will be appointed in some important states, including Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
