The University of Delhi (DU) will increase the fees for first-year students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs as well as for international students hoping to enroll beginning in the 2024–2025 academic year.
Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh approved in June the updated tuition schedule for the August start of classes. According to Singh, who was quoted in a media report, DU colleges have an annual price hike whereby the tuition is increased by 5-6% annually to account for inflation.
The hike will be implemented only for the first-year students currently as per the university guidelines,” a source told news agency, PTI.
The university has raised various components of the fee structure, including tuition fees, students’ welfare fund, development fee, facilities and services charges, and economically weaker section support fund.
The fee hike has been met with criticism from teachers and members of the Executive Council (EC), who claim that the fee hikes are meant to repay loans from the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA).
As per the new fee structure, the course fee for first-year BTech students has been hiked by 3.70%, that is, from Rs 2.16 lakh to Rs 2.24 lakh. The fees for the five-year Integrated Law Programmes for the new academic session have been hiked by 5%, that is, from Rs 1.90 lakh to Rs 1.99 lakh. The fees of the four-year Integrated Teachers Education Programme (ITEP), that replaced B.EL.ED under the Faculty of Education, have been raised to Rs 57,400.
In the PhD programmes, the revision in the components of the fee structure has led to a 60.22% hike in the overall fees with scholars having to pay Rs 7,130 from the new session as compared to the previous session where they had to pay fees of Rs 4,450.
The fee has also been hiked for foreign nationals seeking admissions in various programmes of DU.
