The Delhi University announced on Thursday that the elections for the student government would take place on September 22. Due to the Covid-induced lockdown, the DU Students’ Union (DUSU) elections are being held after four years.
Four DUSU office bearers, including the president, vice president, secretary, and joint secretary, as well as members of the central council are up for election.
Vikas Gupta, the registrar of the University of Denver, published an election schedule that specifies September 12 as the final day for the receipt of nomination papers. Following that will be the examination of the nomination papers, followed on the following day by the release of the list. The final list of candidates will be released on September 13; the deadline for withdrawal of nominations is September 12.
For students in the morning batches, voting will take place from 8:30 am to 1 pm, and for students in the evening college batches, voting will take place from 3 pm to 7:30 pm.
Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to run for office and vote ballots. The chief election officer, Professor Chandra Shekhar, stated last week that elections typically take place 6 to 8 weeks after institutions open. Elections will be held using electronic voting machines (EVMs), and the full procedure takes about 10 to 12 days.
The age range for undergraduate student candidates in the most recent DUSU election, which was conducted in 2019, was 17 to 22 years, and the maximum age for postgraduate students was 25. However, the institution intends to raise the age restriction this year; this will be disclosed on Friday, according to registrar Gupta.
Akshit Dahiya, the current DUSU president and a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), said that his organisation has already begun its election campaigning. We’re attempting to raise awareness to increase voter turnout, the man remarked. The present classes of students have never participated in or voted ballots in student elections.
The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) member and current DUSU secretary, shish Lamba, announced that his party would shortly release its election manifesto. He noted that the duty of informing people about the DUSU elections and raising awareness of them falls to the current DUSU members.
The All India Students Association (AISA) announced their intention to run for office. The party added in a statement that “AISA led the push against online tests and later for the reopening of the campus when lockdown struck. In February 2022, Delhi University reopened as a result of the AISA’s 56-day strike. Since then, AISA has spearheaded the opposition against Delhi University’s four-year undergraduate programme while advocating for affordable and high-quality education.
In the meantime, the elections for the DU Teachers’ Association (DUTA) have been set for September 27. The deadline for teacher nominations is set for September 19 and 20, per the election schedule. On September 21, the whole list of candidates will be released. The Arts Building complex and Satyakam Bhawan on DU’s north campus are where the elections will take place.
A Democratic United Teachers’ Alliance was formed on August 12 by a number of different teacher organisations, including Democratic Teachers’ Front. These organisations included the Democratic Teachers’ Front, Academic for Action and Development Teachers Association, and Indian National Teachers’ Congress, among others. Aditya Narayan Misra will run for the position of DUTA president, it was revealed.
AK Bhagi, a member of the National Democratic Teachers’ Front, is now the president of DUTA.
