Delhi Police Launch Investigation into Rashmika Mandanna’s Deepfake Scandal

The Delhi Police have initiated a probe into the disturbing case of a deepfake AI-generated video featuring renowned actor Rashmika Mandanna. The First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under sections 465 and 469 of the IPC, 1860, and sections 66C and 66E of the IT Act, 2000 at the PS Special Cell, Delhi Police.

This legal action follows widespread circulation of the deepfake video on various social media platforms, prompting the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) to take suo-moto cognizance of the matter. The DCW, in an official statement, expressed concern over the illegal morphing of Rashmika Mandanna’s image in the video and highlighted the gravity of the situation.

“The Delhi Commission for Women has taken suo-moto cognizance on media reports of a deepfake video of Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna circulating widely on several social media platforms. Reportedly, the actress has also raised her concerns in the matter and has stated that someone has illegally morphed her picture in the video,” the statement read.

The DCW has emphasized that, to date, no arrests have been made in connection with the case. Seeking swift action, the commission has requested a copy of the FIR, along with details of the accused, by November 17.

“The Commission has learnt that till date no arrests have been made in the case. This is a very serious matter. In view of the above, please provide a copy of the FIR registered in the matter, details of the accused arrested in the matter and a detailed action taken report in the matter,” the statement added.

Considering the gravity of the situation, the DCW has set a deadline of November 17 for the submission of the requested information.

This deepfake scandal not only raises questions about the misuse of technology but also underlines the need for stringent measures to curb such offenses. As the investigation unfolds, the spotlight remains on the Delhi Police to bring those responsible to justice.
