A family of three had their hopes of relocating to Canada dashed after they fell for scammers who promised them citizenship and employment in the country located in North America, defrauding them out of Rs. 58 lakh.
The fraudsters, who claimed to have strong links within the Canadian embassy, were introduced to the family last year. According to authorities, the couple received fictitious appointment letters pretending to be a senior manager and a receptionist at a Vancouver hotel.
After taking the money, the fraudsters closed their office in Lajpat Nagar and fled.
After a case was filed, the criminal branch began looking into it.
Police were informed by the complainant, Deepak Kumar (36), who lives in west Delhi, that he had dreamed of moving to Canada with his wife and children. He did this by getting in touch with a friend of his who had also applied for a work permit and a Canadian visa via an agency who posted adverts on social media, according to the police.
The couple received fake joining letters after meeting with the agent and paying over Rs. 58 lakh in installments between March 2022 and March 2023. However, the fraudsters delayed the family’s arrival under the pretext of procedural and other procedures, according to the police.
When Kumar urged the suspects to return his money due to the excessive delay, the Canadian embassy threatened to blacklist him and forfeit the full amount, according to police. When the complainant visited the office, he discovered it had already been deserted. Subsequently, Kumar contacted his friend, who informed him that the fraudsters were not returning his calls.
