Debate Erupts in First Hour of J&K’s New Assembly

The first hour of the newly constituted Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir was marred by commotion as People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Waheed Para submitted a resolution rejecting the repeal of Article 370 and demanding for the reinstatement of J&K’s special status.

A uproar erupted in the Assembly following Para’s resolution on Article 370, which was vigorously opposed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs. The BJP asked that Para’s words be removed and accused him of breaking Assembly norms.

Furthermore, People’s Conference leader Sajjad Lone mocked Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for presenting Kashmiri shawls to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Delhi.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti hailed Waheed Para’s resolution in the J&K Assembly. “Proud of Waheed Parra for introducing resolution in JK Assembly opposing the revocation of Article 370 and resolve to restore the special status. God bless you,” she said on X.

‘Resolution on Article 370 only for cameras’: Omar Abdullah

Commenting on the resolution on Article 370, Omar Abdullah said it had no importance and was brought only for the cameras without proper consultation. “The reality is that the people of J&K do not approve of the decision taken on 5th August 2019. If they had approved, then the results today would have been different. How the House will reflect and discuss this will not be decided by any one member,” he said.

“The resolution brought today has no importance but it is only for the cameras. If there was a purpose behind it, then they would have discussed this with us before,” Abdullah added.

The Assembly convened at 10:30 am on Monday morning and was adjourned within an hour before J&K Lieutenant Governor’s address at 11:30 pm.

Addressing the Assembly, Sinha highlighted the high voter turnout in the J&K Assembly election and said it reflected the trust of the voters. “This is a moment of huge satisfaction. My priority was to hold assembly elections,” he said on the first day of the Assembly.

“I look forward to working with you all. Our people now look up to the government with hope. Restoration of statehood remains a key demand. My government will make full efforts for the restoration of statehood,” the LG further said.
