Dalip Tahil Sentenced to Two Months in Jail for 5-Year-Old Hit-and-Run Case

On October 21st, a Mumbai magistrate court handed down a two-month prison sentence to veteran Bollywood actor Dalip Tahil in a hit-and-run case dating back five years. The charges stem from an incident in September 2018 when Tahil was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and was involved in an accident that caused injuries to passengers in an autorickshaw.

The incident occurred on the evening of September 25, 2018, around 9 PM in Khar, Mumbai. Dalip Tahil’s car collided with an autorickshaw, resulting in injuries to two passengers, 21-year-old Jenita Gandhi and 22-year-old Gaurav Chugh. The impact caused significant jolts to the backs of Gandhi and Chugh. After the collision, they observed Tahil attempting to flee the scene, heading towards Santacruz. However, his escape was foiled when he became trapped in a traffic jam during the Ganeshotsav festival.

Members of the public detained Dalip Tahil and a scuffle ensued as he tried to escape. Subsequently, he was taken into custody by the police. He was initially arrested and later granted bail. Photographs of him sitting in the police station during that period were widely circulated in the media.

At the time of the incident, Dalip Tahil was booked on charges of causing injury due to reckless and negligent driving. He was also charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicle Act for driving under the influence of alcohol. Notably, at the Khar Police Station, Tahil refused to provide a blood sample for an alcohol test, and he was released on bail due to a lack of evidence.

During the recent sentencing, the magistrate relied on the statement of the medical officer who examined Tahil following the accident. The medical officer’s report mentioned signs of alcohol, including a smell of alcohol, an unsteady gait, dilated pupils, and incoherent speech.

This verdict serves as a reminder that legal matters can resurface years after an incident, and individuals, regardless of their status, are subject to the consequences of their actions.
